Material and Chemical Research Laboratories has been engaged in the area of materials research for more than 40 years since its foundation. The focused area evolved from tradition industries such as textile, petrochemical, steel, ceramics, into advanced materials research to cope with the challenge of quick change in world industries. The R&D achievement of the center is critical to the development of Taiwan’s electronics, optoelectronics, flat panel display, energy storage, and others to address the world competition faced by local industries. In addition to solving the problems encountered by local industries, the center is also the pioneer in developing high-end material and component technologies leading to next-generation products with innovation and self-sustained intellectual property strategy. In collaboration with local industry partners and through an open innovation platform, the center has built up enabling technologies by involving world class institutes and academia.
Vision
• Building up a unique technology innovation platform to pursue technology breakthroughs in order to become an industrial technology innovation pool by linking academia and industries with a central scheme of an open collaboration concept.
• Establishing a pivot position of materials and chemical technologies in a distributed technology innovation system to become a world classtechnology R&D institute.
Development and Business Strategies
The Material and Chemical Research Laboratories act as the fundamental materials research platform for ITRI’s other departments. Through the guidance of a technology roadmap and an enabling technology innovation platform, the strategies carried out by a multidisciplinary scheme will lead to a world pioneering innovative R&D platform. The Lab put a lot of resources into materials and specialty chemicals research along with the joint effort of world class academia and strong ties with industries to meet the industry needs as well as consolidate its value chain. An appropriate business model will be chosen in conjunction with the material enabling technology platform to nurture spin-off companies, and create a sustainable world class industries innovative structure and entrepreneurship system.

The Material and Chemical Research Laboratories is devoted to boosting traditional industries’ competitiveness and the growth of emerging industries including green energy, biomedical and biomass materials with the strategic integration of generic technologies and applied technologies. Currently the Labs are dedicated to the key technologies development as follows:
• Cutting-edge ICT electronics materials, including flexible/printable devices, IC substrate and green materials.
• Green energy materials and devices, including lithium ion battery, Solid state battery, photovoltaic, solid state lighting, fuel cell and supercapacitor.
• High value-added chemical materials, including high performance fiber, petrochemical industry materials and fine/specialty chemicals.
• Sustainable environment and social benefits related, including water resources treatment, bio-based materials, health care, green building materials, safety assessment and emergent gears/supplies.
